The Holland Tunnel connecting NY to NJ under the Hudson River was, until recently, lit by 8-foot, T12 fluorescent lamps rated to last approximately 1.4 years. With our extensive knowledge of LED lighting sources and their infrastructural applications, we were hired as a consultant by the client to provide recommendations for the replacement of the existing lighting and electrical infrastructure. The existing lighting reached the end of its useful life and was replaced by LEDs with a life expectancy of 7-plus years on a 24-hour cycle. The design will be useful for the next 30 years and has been future-proofed for easy access and replacement of lamps. Additionally, we developed comprehensive specifications for LED fixtures for infrastructural applications, performed appraisal matrices, developed standardized testing procedures, and oversaw design and development of the appropriate linear LED fixture with an easily replaceable LED module.
