The architectural design of this private residence was based on the Hindu principles of Vastu Shastra. The adherence and emphasis of these principles for the lighting design was a complex challenge and informed the lighting design solution for this residence. Our research looked at the relevant principles of Vastu that impact the use of lighting in residential projects, such as soft light creates positive energy. All the lighting responses essentially engaged the materiality provided to us by the architects; the choice of the distribution and intensity of the light was inspired and informed by the material selection and the layering of visual information and spatial massing.
