Incorporate Biophilic Responses
Biophilia means “love of living things”. “Biophilic design” can refer to several trends in modern “green” design, but in most uses it indicates a design principle that goes beyond merely minimizing the impact of the built environment to create actual close contact between users and the “natural” world.
Problem: A constant disconnection from natural environments can negatively affect our mental health. This is an ongoing problem in our society today, as most of our life is spent in the indoor environment, continually being bombarded by the dirty energy given off by electronics.
- Establish a light design that brings associations of nature into healthcare facilities
- Introduce light that incorporates the movement, reflection, and refractions of water to help reduce stress and increase feelings of tranquility
- Incorporation of natural phenomenon such as the dappling of light through tree branches or ripples of water in the work environment to boost the well being of its inhabitants and encourage them to become more engaged
