G9 is a 215 acre site located at the juncture between the CBD to the west – a large scale extreme grid and tower environment; Phase 3 to the East – an informal, small scale residential environment; and the canal which permeates these places with water from the Gulf. Formed by the orthogonal grid of the streets, the massing of the west side of Precinct G9 is formal in style and character. The east side of the precinct is informal and creates irregular open spaces that expand and contract as they move through the mass buildings.
Water, a powerful element, feeds the landscape as well as erodes and transforms it. Situated in the formal urban park, an informal fresh water source associated with it runs down the streets and the university quad to return to nature and the sea. This literal interaction of the informal and formal creates special amphitheater coves within the university block and the lovely landscapes of the moat streets.
