The Holland Tunnel was initially lit by eight foot T12 fluorescent lamps rated to last approximately 1.4 years. The existing lighting reached the end of its useful life and was replaced by LEDs with a life expectancy of 5+ years. The design will be useful for the next 30 years and will be future proof for easy access/replacement of lamps.
With an extensive knowledge of LED lighting sources and their application, AWA was brought on as a Consultant by the Port Authority to give recommendations for replacement of the existing lighting/ electrical infrastructure. Additionally AWA developed comprehensive specifications for LED fixtures for infrastructural applications, performed appraisal matrices, developed standardized testing procedures, and oversaw design and development of the appropriate linear LED fixture with an easily replaceable LED module.
